The M. L. SMITH Scholarship
Marvin was a professional engineer who received a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army who spent many years in service in the area of Italy helping resolve environmental health issues in countries severely damaged by the Second World War. By 1964, he was the Director of the Environmental Health Section of the New Haven Health Department.
About 1966, Marvin was hired by the Connecticut State Health Department as a sanitary engineer in charge of housing related health matters. Soon thereafter, he began working in the Subsurface Sewage Disposal Section and was instrumental in getting concrete galleries approved for use in Connecticut. After a couple of years working for the State, Marvin left to work as a field service environmental health engineer for the Rotondo Company in Avon, CT, a manufacturer of septic tanks and concrete sewage leaching galleries.
Marvin always expressed a strong desire to help other people become involved in the field of public health. When Marvin passed away in the early 1970's, his strong interest in helping others resulted in Rotondo, Inc. designating a sum of money to be used as a scholarship for those interested in entering the public health field. Hence, the creation of the Marvin L. Smith Scholarship Award which continues to be administered by CEHA.
